VIPERS DOWN REDHAWKS; TRIM ROSTER

The Calgary Vipers' offense exploded for 10 runs in their final preseason game for a 10-9 win over the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, North Dakota. Averaging 8.4 runs in their 5 exhibition games the deadly Calgary offense looks to be in midseason form with the Vipers finishing 2-1-2 in preseason play.

Fargo-Moorhead got on the score board first in the bottom of the 1st thanks to 5 walks givin up by Calgary starter Chris Schutt for 2 runs. Schutt was still effective lasting 3 innings giving up those 2 runs on no hits, while striking out 4 and walking 8 batters in total.

It did not take the Vipers long to respond as the next half inning Calgary would take advantage of 2 errors and later have Nelson Castro double to drive in the go ahead run making the score 3-2.

The Snakes added to their lead in the 4th, after loading the bases, Carlos Duncan drove in 2 with a single and later in the frame Jason Colson would also drive in 2 more runs to cap a 6 run inning and give Calgary a big 9-2 lead.

The Redhawks inched close in the bottom of the 5th as Brian Munhall took advantage of a Calgary error driving in 2 runs with a double.

Geoff Freeborn had another strong outing coming in for the 6th inning and shutting down the heart of the Redhawks' order.

With the score 9-4 the Vipers hit double digits for the 2nd time this spring scoring in the 7th inning on 2 more Fargo-Moorhead errors.

The home squad made things very interesting in the bottom of the 7th and 8th innings. Fargo-Moorhead added 5 runs in the two frames but that is as close as they would come as David Manning made his first appearance for Calgary coming in for the 9th inning and closing the door for the Vipers' win.

Field Manager Mike Busch cut his roster to 22 as the team headed for Joliet right after the game. Signed to the Vipers were Japanese pitcher Kazuaki Minami, Venezuelan outfielder Jorge Tang and backup catcher Kevin Price. The Vipers traded rookie left-handed pitcher Danny Hall to the Edmonton Cracker Cats for future considerations. Hall simply stayed in Fargo to await his new teammates who arrive in North Dakota Tuesday night. Released by the Vipers were RHP Jon Bryant and three non-roster players, LHP Jerome Godsey, RHP Tomoyuki Kizu and outfielder Dan Chappel.
