The Calgary Vipers are now
4-1 after a 10-0 defeat at
the hands of the
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at
Newman Outdoor Field in
Fargo, North Dakota. The
RedHawks scored four runs in
the very first inning and
that's all they needed in
the shutout of Calgary. The
Vipers did manage to pick up
eight hits on the night but
failed to capitalize with
runners on base.
Joe Mathis led off the
bottom of the first with his
second homerun in as many
nights to leadoff the game
for his team. Mike Just
followed with a double off
Calgary starter Tom Lyons
and later scored on a Jon
Weber RBI groundout. Tydus
Meadows and Richard Austin
then singled and were
brought in by Clint Johnston
and Brian Munhall runs
batted in to make it 4-0.
Fargo-Moorhead added to
their lead in the fourth
after Johnston doubled,
moved up to third on a
groundout, and then scored
on a passed ball. Darryl
Lawhorn then singled, went
to second on a ground out
and scored on Mathis' second
RBI of the night to push the
lead to 6-0.
Lyons took the loss and
was pulled to start the
fifth inning, after giving
up six earned runs on eight
hits, in favour of Kazuaki
Minami who had a fantastic
outing. Minami went three
innings not allowing a run
or even a single hit while
striking out four.
The RedHawks continued to
put up runs in the eight off
Vipers' reliever Ryan Klatt
who replaced Minami to start
the inning. Austin and
Johnston singled and then
the first walk of the game
by a Calgary pitcher was
given out to Lawhorn. Kory
Wayment then smacked a bases
clearing triple to put the
game officially out of
reach. Two batters later
Just drove in Wayment to put
the lead into double digits
at 10-0.
Mike Peschel picked up
the win for the RedHawks
going six and a third
innings of no run baseball.
Peschel did give up eight
hits in that time but was
very effective in pitching
around trouble. Doug Young
and Jason Schutt completed
the three pitcher shutout
throwing the last two and
two third innings not
allowing a hit.
These two teams meet two
more times on Tuesday night
