VIPERS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT
The Calgary Vipers put the
tying run on base in the
ninth inning but could
not capitalize losing 9-7 to
the Joliet JackHammers at
Foothills Stadium in
Calgary, Alberta. Joliet led
7-1 after four and a half
innings and added some much
needed insurance late in the
game to escape with a series
win of the four game set.
For the second straight
night the JackHammers
pounced on the Vipers early
scoring three runs in the
top of the first inning.
Cory Harris doubled and Chad
Ehrnsberger walked to set up
a Juan Diaz RBI double and a
Derek Nicholson two run
single.
A double by Chris Brown and
a RBI single by Harris made
it 4-0 in the top of the
second.
Calgary got that one run
back in the bottom of the
third when Shaun Ashman
scored on a Darryl Brinkley
RBI fielder's choice.
Ehrnsberger led of the fifth
with a single and then
Calgary starter Phil Sobkow
plunked Juan Diaz to put two
on for Nicholson who
promptly hammered a three
run shot to make it 7-1
Joliet.
Jorge Tang scored on a
Brinkley RBI in the fifth to
get the Vipers within five.
The Snakes rallied in
the sixth thanks to three
straight walks to
Carlos Duncan, Jason Colson,
and Mitch Evans. Kevin Price
hit a sacrifice fly to score
one run, Colson scored on a
wild pitch for the second
run, and finally Manabu
Kuramochi singled home Evans
and Jorge Tang after Anthony
Monegan booted the single in
center field. Calgary was
now within one run at 7-6.
Insurance runs were scored
by the JackHammers in the
seventh when Tang dropped a
ball in center allowing
Kevin Sullivan to score and
also in the ninth when a
Kazu Minami wild pitch
allowed Eric Scriven to
plate.
A ninth inning rally was
mounted by the Vipers with
Brinkley and Castro reaching
base to lead off the
inning. With one out Colson
singled home Brinkley and
put the tying run on first.
However Matt Petrusek struck
out Evans and Drew Miller to
end the ball game.
The Northern League Player
of the Week Nicholson
continued to mash going
three-for-five with five
runs batted in and a run
scored.
Brinkley extended his
hitting streak to 10 games
and Miller extended his on
base streak to 11.
Calgary now welcomes the
Gary SouthShore RailCats to
Foothills Stadium for a
three game series Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday with
all games starting at 7:05
PM (MDT). Tickets can be
ordered by phone at 277-BALL
(2255) and all games can be
heard live online at www.am770chqr.com.
