VIPERS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

The Calgary Vipers put the tying run on base in the ninth inning but could not capitalize losing 9-7 to the Joliet JackHammers at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Joliet led 7-1 after four and a half innings and added some much needed insurance late in the game to escape with a series win of the four game set.
 
For the second straight night the JackHammers pounced on the Vipers early scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Cory Harris doubled and Chad Ehrnsberger walked to set up a Juan Diaz RBI double and a Derek Nicholson two run single.
 
A double by Chris Brown and a RBI single by Harris made it 4-0 in the top of the second.
 
Calgary got that one run back in the bottom of the third when Shaun Ashman scored on a Darryl Brinkley RBI fielder's choice.
 
Ehrnsberger led of the fifth with a single and then Calgary starter Phil Sobkow plunked Juan Diaz to put two on for Nicholson who promptly hammered a three run shot to make it 7-1 Joliet.
 
Jorge Tang scored on a Brinkley RBI in the fifth to get the Vipers within five.
 
The Snakes rallied in the sixth thanks to three straight walks to Carlos Duncan, Jason Colson, and Mitch Evans. Kevin Price hit a sacrifice fly to score one run, Colson scored on a wild pitch for the second run, and finally Manabu Kuramochi singled home Evans and Jorge Tang after Anthony Monegan booted the single in center field. Calgary was now within one run at 7-6.
 
Insurance runs were scored by the JackHammers in the seventh when Tang dropped a ball in center allowing Kevin Sullivan to score and also in the ninth when a Kazu Minami wild pitch allowed Eric Scriven to plate.
 
A ninth inning rally was mounted by the Vipers with Brinkley and Castro reaching base to lead off the inning. With one out Colson singled home Brinkley and put the tying run on first. However Matt Petrusek struck out Evans and Drew Miller to end the ball game.
 
The Northern League Player of the Week Nicholson continued to mash going three-for-five with five runs batted in and a run scored.
 
Brinkley extended his hitting streak to 10 games and Miller extended his on base streak to 11.
