The Calgary Vipers
allowed three runs
to score in the top
of the ninth inning
to tie the game on
their way to losing
in extra innings to
the Gary SouthShore
RailCats 8-7 at
Foothills Stadium in
Calgary, Alberta.
David Manning came
in for the save but
walked three and
gave up three hits
to blow the save. A
RBI single by Mike
Reese in the 12th
inning stood up as
the game winner.
For the third
straight game the
Vipers gave up
multiple runs in the
first inning. Jay
Pecci and Jermaine
Allensworth singled
and after moving to
third on a pop up
scored on a Jose
Yepez two run
single.
The Vipers though
responded right back
in the bottom of the
second after walks
to Drew Miller and
Jorge Tang, Darryl
Brinkley hit a two
run double to tie
the game at two.
Nelson Castro
followed with a RBI
double of his own to
give Calgary the
lead.
In the fourth the
Snakes added to
their lead after
Tang again walked,
Brinkley once again
drove him in with a
double and then
scored himself on
two wild pitches to
make it 5-2.
Jason Colson's
second homerun of
the season to lead
off the fifth inning
gave Calgary a 6-2
lead.
In the sixth Steve
Haake singled,
Tanner Townsend
walked, and Dave
Detienne drove in
Haake with a
single to chase
Calgary starter Tom
Lyons from the
game. Ryan Klatt
came in and gave up
a RBI fielder's
choice to Mike Reese
that made it 6-4.
Lyons ended up going
five and a third
giving up four
earned runs on six
hits while walking
and striking out
three.
Calgary grabbed a
run back in the
bottom half of the
sixth when Carlos
Duncan singled in
Manabu Kuramochi.
The game stayed 7-4
until the top of the
ninth when Manning
came in for the
save. However
Manning allowed the
first five batters
of the inning to
reach base. Eric
McNamee walked, Pecci
walked, Allensworth
singled home a run,
Haake walked, and
Yepez singled a run
home to make it 7-6.
With two outs Detienne
hit a high bouncer
off the glove of
Manning for a
infield single to
tie the game.
It wasn't until the
12th when the next
and final run was
scored. After
Detienne walked to
lead off the inning
he was sacrificed to
second and then
singled home by
Reese to make it
8-7.
The Vipers got solid
outings from Klatt,
Randy Waite, and
Ryan Olson out of
the bullpen combing
for four innings,
giving up only two
hits for no runs and
striking out three.
Brinkley was
two-for-four with
two runs scored and
three runs batted in
to extend his
hitting streak to 11
games. Miller
extended his on-base
