The Calgary Vipers left the bases loaded twice
and six runners in scoring position on their way to a 5-2 loss
at the hands of the Long Beach Armada at Foothills Stadium in
Calgary, Alberta. In total the Vipers left ten runners on base
and managed only eight hits for the entire game. The Armada have
now won the first two games of this series and Calgary's record
drops to 10-11 in the second half and 36-29 overall.
Nelson Castro led off the bottom of the first
inning with his ninth homerun of the season for a 1-0 Calgary
lead.
Long Beach tied the game and took their first
lead in the top of the third starting with a leadoff walk by
David Ramirez, a Mike Glomb ground out to move Ramirez to second
base, and a run batted in single by Julian Williams. A wild
pitch moved Williams to second base, he went to third on a pop
fly into right field by Steve Moss, and scored on another wild
pitch for the 2-1 advantage.
Ryan Lehr smacked a leadoff homerun in the top
of the fourth inning for the 3-1 Armada lead.
The Vipers loaded the bases in the bottom of
the fifth frame thanks to singles from Jorge Tang, Patrick Arlis,
and Jorge Mejia. Castro knocked in his second run of the game
with a sacrifice fly for the 3-2 score but Calgary left the
bases loaded in the inning.
The Armada responded in the next half inning
when Lehr reached on a throwing error by third baseman Travis
Drader, Octavio Martinez singled, and Dan Trumble plated two
runs with a triple for the 5-2 lead.
Dane Renkert (0-2) took the loss in tossing
six innings and allowing three earned runs. Ryan Claypool (6-6)
picked up the victory allowing two runs in five innings while
Wayne Foltin (2) picked up his second save in as many nights
with a scoreless ninth frame.
Former NHL star Theo Fleury will be taking
batting practice with the Calgary Vipers on both Thursday August
7th and Friday August 8th starting at 4:00 PM (MDT). Also after
batting practice is complete on Thursday the Vipers will be
holding a media conference for Fleury to officially sign his
Golden League Contract.
Calgary concludes their series with the
Armada Thursday August 7th starting at 7:05 PM (MDT) with Nate
Melek (4-4) starting.
