The Calgary Vipers won their second straight game and remained one game back of first place in the North Division with a 7-3 win over the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Chris Schutt got the win for the Snakes going seven solid innings giving up only three runs on eight hits. Jason Colson led the offence, which collected 15 hits, with his three-for-four, one run scored, and three runs batted in night.
The Vipers scored first in the second inning, when after a double, Colson scored on a Drew Miller single.
The lead was doubled in the third as Carlos Duncan doubled and was drove home by Colson.
Edmonton cut the lead in half and made it a one run game with a Tim Ryan double and Terrence McClain RBI single.
For the second straight night the Snakes broke open a close ballgame with a big inning. Tonight it was the seventh inning as Jorge Tang led off with a single, Manabu Kuramochi walked, Darryl Brinkley singled home Tang, Nelson Castro singled to bring in Kuramochi, and Colson drove in two with his shot up the middle to make it 6-1.
The Cracker-Cats responded in the bottom half of the inning with Rob Recuenco leading off with a base hit, Ryan walking, George Sandel doubling to plate Recuenco, and McClain hitting a sacrifice fly to score Ryan, cutting the lead to three at 6-3.
Calgary added some insurance in the top of the ninth with Duncan singling, Colson walking, and Mitch Evans plating Duncan on a single for a 7-3 score.
Geoff Freeborn went an inning and two thirds allowing two hits and striking out three and handed the ball to Ryan Klatt for his first save of the year striking out the only batter he faced to end the game.
