The Calgary Vipers gave up a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning but showed great moxie in not letting the late comeback phase them as the won 4-3 in extra innings over the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The victory makes it three in a row for the Snakes and ensures themselves the series, however they still remain one game behind the first place Winnipeg Goldeyes in the North Division. Evan Greusel made yet another quality start for the Vipers but unfortunately for the fourth time this season, after leaving the game with the lead, did not factor into the decision. Greusel went five innings, giving up five hits for one run while striking out three.
The Cracker-Cats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as George Sandel doubled and later scored on a double play groundout.
The game stayed 1-0 until the top of the sixth when Nelson Castro double, Jason Colson was intentionally walked, and Mitch Evans singled to load the bases. Next up Drew Miller delivered a two run single up the middle giving Calgary the 2-1 lead. Miller ended the game going three-for-five.
An inning later the Snakes made it 3-1 as Manabu Kuramochi singled, Darryl Brinkley doubled, and Castro plated Kuramochi with a base hit.
In the bottom of the eighth Edmonton got a clutch two out double by ex-Viper Adam Shorsher scoring both Kyle Nichols and Terrence McClain to tie the game at three and eventually force extra innings.
Calgary jumped back in front in the top of the tenth with Carlos Duncan leading the inning off with a single. The speedy Duncan then took second on a steal and moved to third on a very productive Colson groundout to the right side of the infield. A few pitches later the ground ball paid off when Duncan scored on a wild pitch giving the Vipers the 4-3 lead and eventual victory.
Ryan Klatt picked up his first win on the season while Randy Waite picked up his first save. Waite after walking the leadoff batter in the tenth and having Jorge Tang make a game saving catch in centerfield, induced a groundball for a double play to end the ballgame.
