VIPERS SUFFER ONLY THIRD ROAD LOSS

The Calgary Vipers were unable to complete the sweep of the Edmonton Cracker-Cats today, getting smoked 11-1 at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. With the loss the Snakes spoiled a chance to tie the Winnipeg Goldeyes for first place as they were also defeated. Scott Richmond pitched a gem of a game for the win against the top rated Calgary offence. Richmond went eight innings and held the Vipers, who were hitting .307 as a team, to three hits while striking out four.

The Vipers scored first and had their only lead of the game in the second inning as Jason Colson extended his on base streak to 21 games with a walk, Mitch Evans singled and Shaun Ashman picked up his first RBI of the season with a single.

Edmonton tied the game and took the lead in a big way with a four run bottom of the second. Kyle Nichols walked, Chris Becker doubled, Adam Shorsher singled in Nichols, Jason Aspito drove home Becker with a base hit, Tim Ryan hit a sacrifice fly and finally Aspito scored on a wild pitch.

Two more runs were added in the bottom of the fifth as Ryan Radmanovich doubled in Terrence McClain and Nichols went back-to-back doubling home Radmanovich to make the score 6-1. That was all for new Vipers pitcher Jordy Alexander who joined the team after starting the year in Edmonton, and lasted four and a third innings giving up six runs while striking out four.

The onslaught continued in the seventh inning as Nichols drove in McClain, Aspito had a RBI single, and Rhett Teller plated another run pushing the lead to eight at 9-1.

The scoring was capped and the lead pushed to double digits in the eighth against another new Vipers pitcher Mike Stein. Radmanovich doubled in a run and Chris Becker grounded out for the final RBI of the game.
