BRINKLEY AGAIN NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Northern League announced that Calgary Vipers outfielder Darryl Brinkley was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Joliet JackHammers pitcher Nate Sevier received the Pitcher of the Week honours for the week ending June 24, 2007.

Brinkley, who is receiving the Player of the Week honour for the second time this season (June 4th-10th), batted .571 (16-for-28) with 13 RBI, four home runs, and seven runs scored for the week. The hot week catapulted the 14-year veteran into Triple Crown contention. He currently leads the league with a .419 average and 40 RBI, and is tied for the league lead with eight home runs. Batting leadoff for the Vipers in all 35 games this season, he has been the catalyst for one of the league’s top offences. When leading off an inning, Brinkley is batting an amazing .509 (28-for-55) for the North Division leading Vipers.

On the season, Brinkley has hit in 32 of 35 games, including 21 multi-hit games. Earlier this season he hit in a league-high 23 consecutive games (May 18th – June 13th) and headed into Tuesday’s North Division showdown versus his former team the Winnipeg Goldeyes, he has a seven-game hitting streak. The 5-11, 205-pound outfielder, has been playing professionally since 1994 and has played pro ball in  Holland, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Korea, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico in addition to the United States. The Norwalk, CT native, batted .368 for the Vipers in 2006.
