The Calgary Vipers moved back into first place in the North Division with a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at CanWest Global Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jordy Alexander was fantastic in going eight innings, giving up no runs on only five hits and walking just one while striking out eight. Alexander has now thrown 15 consecutive scoreless innings after his seven inning complete game shutout against Edmonton in his last start. With a Fargo-Moorhead loss the Snakes are now a half game ahead of them in the standings with 11 games remaining in the first half.
Winnipeg starter Brett Lawson carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning but that is when he ran into trouble. Aaron McEachran lead off with a walk, Mitch Evans picked up the Vipers first hit of the game, and Drew Miller walked to load the bases. Lawson continued with control problems walking Manabu Kuramochi to give Calgary the 1-0 lead. Darryl Brinkley followed by adding to his league leading RBI total with a sacrifice fly for his 41st RBI of the season.
Miller was back on base again in the seventh with a leadoff single. Jorge Tang sacrificed Miller up to second base and after a wild pitch to move him up to third, Nelson Castro hit a ground rule double to make the score 3-0.
The Goldeyes made things very interesting in the ninth with a two out rally. With Antoin Gray on at second Luis Alen hit a RBI single and Max Poulin followed with a hit to put runners at first and second. Randy Waite came into the ballgame and gave up a RBI single to Jordan Lundberg to close the game to 3-2. But Waite was able to get the next batter Fehlandt Lentini to ground out to end the game and record his second save of the season.
Calgary was walked seven times in the game and that was led by Kuramochi with three of them. Five of those walks came from Lawson who picked up his first loss on the season.
