The Calgary
Vipers'
pitching
staff held
the Winnipeg
Goldeyes to
only
five base
knocks in
their 3-2
win at
CanWest
Global Park
in Winnipeg,
Manitoba.
Chris Schutt
made the
start for
the Snakes
and went six
innings
allowing
just one
earned run
on only four
hits. After
Tom Lyons
picked up
two big outs
in the
seventh,
Ryan Olson
came in for
the final
two and a
third and
was
spectacular
giving up
only one hit
and striking
out five of
the seven
outs he
recorded.
Drew Miller
was
responsible
for a five
run swing
when he
broke up a
double
play allowing
two runs to
score and in
the field,
leaping at
the wall to
rob Fehlandt
Lentini of a
three run
homerun.
With a
Fargo-Moorhead
loss the
Vipers now
hold a game
and a half
lead in the
North
Division
with 10
games
remaining in
the first
half.
The top of
the order
provided a
run in the
first inning
for the 14th
time this
season with
Darryl
Brinkley
singling.
Miller
followed by
sacrificing
Brinkley up
to second,
Carlos Duncan was
hit by a
pitch and
Mitch Evans
singled to
load the
bases.
Aaron
McEachran
singled to
left field
to make the
score 1-0.
Winnipeg got
that run
right back
in the
bottom of
the inning
with Lentini
singling,
stealing
second,
being bunted
to third by
Anton
French, and
scoring on a
Chris Latham
sacrifice
fly.
Calgary took
the lead
right
back in the
second,
again
loading the
bases with a
Manabu
Kuramochi
single and
walks to
Brinkley and
Miller.
Duncan
followed by
hitting a
groundball
that was
tailor made
for a inning
ending
double play
but Miller
had a
fantastic
take out
slide at
second base
to cause
Antoin
Gray's throw
to be high
to first
base and
allow both
Kuramochi
and Brinkley
to score to
give the
Vipers a two
run lead at
3-1.
In the
bottom of
the third
French
singled,
stole
second, and
scored when
shortstop
Jorge Tang's
throw to
first was
high and
into the
stands.
The Goldeyes
put the
tying run on
second base
in the ninth
inning but
Olson got
French to
groundout to
end the
ballgame.
Schutt is
now 4-0 on
the road
this season
with a 4.68
ERA.
