The Calgary Vipers finished off the first half in only an hour and 44 minutes with a 4-3 loss to the Schaumburg Flyers at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Illinois. In a game that was mere hours after the Vipers clinched the division, Calgary failed to pick up their 30th win of the half and finished ten games over five hundred with a 29-19 record. Ryan Wyland made his first professional start and did a solid job going seven innings, giving up seven hits, and three earned runs for a tough first loss of the season.
In the bottom of the first Sandy Almonte walked, stole second, and scored on a Pat O'Sullivan RBI single to give Schaumburg the early 1-0 lead.
The lead was doubled an inning later with a Kyle Leon leadoff solo homerun.
The Flyers continued to put up lone runs in the fourth with O'Sullivan walking, Dario Delgado singling, and Leon grounding out to move the runners into scoring position. Billy Malone then hit a deep fly ball to score O'Sullivan on the sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0.
Calgary rallied in the sixth with Drew Miller singling and Castro reaching on a fielder's choice. Carlos Duncan followed with a base hit and after a wild pitch the Vipers had runners in scoring position. Kyle Nichols continued his great start with the Snakes singling to bring both runners home and close the lead to 3-2.
Schaumburg got a run back in the seventh with Alex Derhak reaching on a error by Jason Colson. David Hoffman followed with a single and Mike Rohde knocked in Derhak with a base hit.
Once again the lead was closed to one in the eighth with a Duncan double followed by a Colson fly out to move him to third base. Nichols brought in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3.
In the bottom of the ninth the Vipers Shaun Ashman picked up his second hit of the day and after Miller's second single of the day the team had the tying run at third base with two outs. Nelson Castro however struck out to end the ballgame and first half.
