SCHUTT SILENCES HOT FISH BATS

Behind great pitching the Calgary Vipers defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-2 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Chris Schutt got the start and went six and two third innings giving up seven hits for only two runs while striking out five. Jeff Groeger picked up right where Schutt left off going the final two and a third giving up two hits and no runs with one strikeout.

In the second inning Calgary for the third time in this series scored the game's first run with Jason Colson hitting his team leading 13th homerun.

An inning later in the third the Vipers welcomed back Mitch Evans to the line-up after, missing seven games with a injured shoulder, and he promptly walked to leadoff the frame. Manabu Kuramochi followed with a sacrifice bunt and after a Darryl Brinkley single and Evans on third, Drew Miller drove him in while reaching on a fielding error for the 2-0 lead. Carlos Duncan walked to bring up Colson with the bases loaded and he delivered again with a two run single for his league leading 54th and 55th runs batted in.

The Goldeyes got a run back in the top of the fourth with a leadoff single from Chris Latham. Schutt attempted to pickoff Latham at first but threw the ball away to allow him to move up to second base. A batter later Walter Young drove him in with a base hit to cut the lead down to 4-1.

The lead was cut in half an inning later in the fifth with a double by Fehlandt Lentini and a two out RBI single from Latham.

In the top of the seventh the Goldeyes threatened with two outs putting two runners on to chase Schutt from the game. Groeger came in and after a walk got Young to groundout to end the inning.

Calgary reclaimed their three run lead in the seventh inning with a leadoff walk to Kuramochi and a single by Brinkley to move him to second base. After a pitching change Kuramochi stole third base on the first pitch and Miller used a sacrifice fly to drive him home for the 5-2 lead.

Another insurance run was added in the eighth inning by the Snakes with a two out single from Jorge Tang. Evans followed with a fly ball out to right field that Latham never saw and it dropped behind him for a RBI double and the 6-2 advantage.
