The Calgary Vipers gave up 21 hits in losing 14-9 to the Schaumburg Flyers at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Flyers did most of their scoring with four three-run innings for 12 of their 14 runs. The Vipers responded with four two-run innings but it was not enough on this night. The loss splits the first two games of this three game series.
Schaumburg opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with three runs. Anthony Monegan walked, Mike Rohde singled, and Jimmy Hurst drove in a run with a infield base hit. Patrick O'Sullivan followed with a RBI double and Christian Snavely finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield for the 3-0 lead.
Right back came the Vipers with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Darryl Brinkley led off with a infield single and Drew Miller walked. Carlos Duncan smoked a single off the centerfield wall for a RBI and Miller scored on a Jason Colson double play ground out for the 3-2 score.
A run was taken back in the top of the second by the Flyers. After two outs had been recorded, Monegan singled and Rohde double him home for the 4-2 advantage.
The Flyers got back at the scoring in the third inning with their second three run frame. O'Sullivan started off by reaching on a throwing error by Nelson Castro. Snavely singled, Billy Malone doubled home a run and Kyle Leon plated another one with a base hit to make the score 7-2.
Another run was added in the fourth inning after a leadoff single by Monegan. Hurst moved him to third base with a hit and Monegan scored on a O'Sullivan fielder's choice for the 8-2 lead.
For the third time Schaumburg had a three run inning in the fifth. Malone singled and after a groundout moved him to second, he scored on a Robert Matlock base hit. A fielding error by Castro with two outs allowed Monegan to reach and Matlock to score. Rohde brought in Monegan with a RBI double for the 11-2 lead.
Calgary got singles from Castro and Kevin Price to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a groundball to move the runners into scoring position, Manabu Kuramochi delivered a two run base knock to cut the lead down to 11-4.
Two more runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth with a Jason Colson single and after a groundout to put him at second base, Castro scored him with a base hit. Castro then plated on a Malone throwing error to make the score 11-6.
Once again the Flyers plated three runs in an inning in the seventh. Rohde singled, Hurst walked, and after a fly ball to put Rohde at third, Snavely scored him with a sacrifice fly. Malone followed with a single, Leon doubled home a run, and Matlock plated one with a base hit for a 14-6 lead.
The Vipers got a run back in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases with Mitch Evans reaching on an error, Miller singling and Kyle Nichols walking. Castro walked on seven pitches for his second run batted in on the evening for the 14-7 score.
For the fourth time Calgary scored two runs in an inning in the ninth. Shaun Ashman walked, Colson singled, and Nichols reached on a fielder's choice. Price knocked home two with a double to left centerfield to finish the scoring on the night at 14-9.
