VIPERS EMBARRASSED AGAIN

The Calgary Vipers tied a season long losing streak at five games with a 13-5 thumping supplied from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The RedHawks have now scored 48 runs on 59 hits in the four games of this series. Darryl Brinkley was the lone bright spot for the Vipers as he went three-for-five with a home run and two runs scored. Brinkley added to his Northern League record with 147 hits in a season and inched closer to .400 at .395 with one game remaining in the season.

Joe Mathis led off the game with a fly ball to left-centerfield the was perfectly placed and dropped for a double. Mike Just followed with a fly ball to move Mathis to third and Tydus Meadows scored him with a line drive into left field for the 1-0 lead.

Darryl Brinkley leadoff the bottom of the inning with his 14th home run of the game to tie the game at one. Drew Miller and Carlos Duncan followed with walks but with none out the heart of the order could not manage anything and ended up leaving two runners in scoring position.

Another double started off the second inning for the RedHawks from Kory Wayment. Dan Maycock hit a groundball to third base that Carlos Duncan had roll between his legs for an error and to put runners at the corners. Casey Haugen picked up a RBI when he reached on a fielder's choice for the 2-1 advantage.

Calgary tied the game in the bottom of the third with back-to-back doubles from Brinkley and Miller to tie the game at two. However with Miller at second base and none out the Vipers would leave another runner in scoring position for the third time in the three innings.

Wayment once again led off an inning with a double in the fourth and moved to third base on a Adam Shorsher base hit. Maycock picked up an RBI with a shallow single to centerfield and after Haugen walked, Just hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to make the score 4-2.

The game was broke wide open in the fifth inning as Fargo-Moorhead sent 12 batters to the plate for eight hits and seven runs. Austin, Munoz, and Wayment brought in a run with three consecutive singles. Shorsher picked up a base hit to load the bases and Haugen hit a sacrifice fly for the second out of the inning and the 6-2 game. However five more runs were added with two outs as Shorsher scored on a passed ball, Just smoked a two run double, and Meadows and Austin had RBI singles for the 11-2 game.

One more run was added in the sixth inning as Shorsher walked, Haugen reached on a fielder's choice, Mathis singled, and Just knocked in his fourth run of the game with a base hit for the double digit lead at 12-2.

Another run was put on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning. Maycock and Mathis walked and Just singled for his fifth run batted in to score Maycock all the way from second base.

Right fielder Maycock came into the game for the bottom of the inning and walked Miller before giving up three straight doubles to Duncan, Jason Colson, and Kyle Nichols for three runs. For Colson it was his league high 87th and 88th runs batted in.

The designated hitter Nichols came into the game to pitch in the ninth and faced the minimum three batters while striking out one for a scoreless frame.

This series concludes Sunday, September 2 at 1:35 PM and it is Fan Appreciation Day to close out the 2007 regular season.
