The Calgary Vipers ended the 2007 regular season in style with a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Foothill Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Darryl Brinkley went three-for-three and became the first player in Northern League history to hit .400 in a season. Brinkley went nine-for-13 in the final three games of the season to lift his average up ten points from .390 to .400. The victory snapped a five game losing streak for the Vipers and sends them to the playoffs on a winning note.
The RedHawks continued where they left off the previous four games with three runs in the top of the first inning. Mike Just doubled and Tydus Meadows singled him home for the first run. After a Richard Austin double Billy Munoz drove in two with a base hit for the 3-0 lead.
Calgary responded in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single and walk by Darryl Brinkley and Drew Miller. Nelson Castro and Jason Colson both followed with RBI singles to cut the lead down to 3-2. Colson improved his league high RBI total to 89. With runners at the corners and nobody out the Vipers were unable to bring in a run to tie the game.
In the next half inning Fargo-Moorhead added to their lead with a run on three straight singles from Meadows, Austin, and Munoz for the 4-2 advantage. The three hits made all three batters two-for-two on the day and the RBI gave Munoz his third on the afternoon.
Shaun Ashman started the fourth inning off with his first triple of the season and after pitcher Tom Lyons picked up his first professional hit earlier in the game, he knocked in Ashman with a sacrifice fly for his first professional RBI. Brinkley in the inning picked up his third hit of the game to go three-for-three and add to his Northern League record with 150 hits on the season. With the hit Brinkley pushed his average on the season to an even .400 and he was lifted from the game to a standing ovation and his teammates greeting him outside of the Vipers dugout.
Calgary starter Kazu Minami put together a solid outing going seven innings and giving up four runs while walking just one and striking out four. Jordy Alexander came into the game for the eighth inning and pitched a perfect frame, needing only nine pitches to retire the side.
Kyle Nichols drilled his 16th home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at four. Calgary put two runners on with one out on a Jorge Tang single and Ashman reaching on a fielding error but were unable to push across the go ahead run.
Evan Greusel came out of the bullpen for the ninth inning and also had a flawless frame getting the side in order on only eight pitches.
In the bottom of the ninth Miller walked for his league high 68th time to bring up Castro who provided the heroics with a double down the left field line that scored Miller for the 5-4 win. The double was Castro's league leading 38th on the season. Greusel picked up his seventh win on the year as the pitcher of record at the time.
The Vipers offence set new Northern League records with 618 runs scored and 577 runs batted in on the season. The team's on base percentage at almost .400 will also go down as a new record.
The Northern League North Division Final opens in Calgary on Tuesday, September 4 and Wednesday, September 5 both at 7:05 PM against Fargo-Moorhead.
