GLEN SHUTS DOWN VIPERS TO EVEN SERIES

The Calgary Vipers were defeated 6-3 by the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta to even the best of five Northern League Championship Series at one win a piece. Willie Glen was fantastic in going eight innings and giving up only one run on four hits. Glen also struck out ten Vipers in throwing 123 pitches. The RailCats batted around in the third inning for four runs and added two more insurance runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Darryl Brinkley picked up where the Vipers left off the night before with a solo homerun to open up the bottom of the first and make the score 1-0.

Gary SouthShore batted around in the top of the third inning and scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Tanner Townsend started the inning with a single, Nate Price followed with a walk, and Dave Detienne tied the game with a RBI base hit. Jay Pecci followed with a RBI fielder's choice to give the RailCats the lead and after a walk to Steve Haake to load the bases, Jose Yepez came up with a big two out, two-run single to cap the scoring.

The RailCats chased Calgary starter Jeff Groeger from the game in the fifth inning with a run off back-to-back doubles from Detienne and Pecci. With Ryan Klatt into the game a ground out moved Pecci to third from where he scored on a Haake sacrifice fly for the 6-1 advantage.

Klatt did a fantastic job coming out of the bullpen as he went three scoreless innings while only giving up one hit and not walking a batter.

Jordy Alexander and Tom Lyons went the final two innings out of the bullpen and also gave up no runs.

In the bottom of the ninth the Vipers made things interesting with a leadoff single by Drew Miller and a RBI double from Jason Colson. After a walk to Kyle Nichols and a RBI single from Buddy Morales, who went three-for-four, Travis Kerber was chased from the game and closer Tony Cogan came in. With two runners on, the tying run at the plate, and two out Cogan was able to record the final out and deadlock the series with a 6-3 victory.

Game 3 of this series is on Friday September 14th at 6:00 PM (MDT) in Gary. Game 4 will go Saturday September 15th at 5:00 PM (MDT) and if necessary Game 5 is Sunday September 16th at 1:00 PM (MDT) also in Gary. The games can be heard live online at am770chqr.com.
