SNAKES FALL ONE WIN SHORT OF CHAMPIONSHIP

In game five of the Championship Final the Calgary Vipers were defeated 5-1 by the Gary SouthShore RailCats at the US Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana. The Vipers season ends one win shy of a Championship after they led the best of five series 2-1. Northern League pitcher of the year, Willie Glen, shutdown the league's best offense for the second time in the series as went the complete game giving up only three hits and one run while striking out ten.

The Vipers had a great chance to score in the top of the second inning with leadoff back-to-back walks to Jason Colson and Kyle Nichols. But after a sacrifice bunt by Nelson Castro to move the runners into scoring position Buddy Morales struck out and Jorge Tang grounded out to end the inning scoreless.

In the bottom of the third Nate Price picked up a single and ended up at third base after a steal and a throwing error by catcher Morales. Eric McNamee followed with a walk and Dave Detienne plated the game's first run with a base hit to centerfield. Jay Pecci also walked to load the bases and Steve Haake delivered a clutch two-out, two-run base knock for the 3-0 lead.

Calgary scored a run in the top of the fifth as Morales singled and moved to second base on a Tang sacrifice bunt. Kuramochi followed with a base hit that Allensworth booted allowing Morales to score. With Kuramochi at second Darryl Brinkley popped up to move him to third and Drew Miller walked to put runners at the corners with two outs. Carlos Duncan though struck out to end the frame at the 3-1 score.

Gary SouthShore added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff double from Eric Blakeley and a groundout by Haake to move him to third base. Jose Yepez followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and then Allensworth and Tanner Townsend both delivered RBI base hits for the 5-1 advantage.
