KURAMOCHI NAMED ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Calgary Vipers second baseman Manabu Kuramochi was today honoured as the Northern League’s selection for Rookie of the Year.

The diminutive fielder from Tokyo was last week named as the League All-star at second base.

Although injured for almost a third of the season, Kuramochi batted .303 with 27 RBIs, 29 stolen bases, and 47 runs scored in 67 games for the Vipers in 2006.

Kuramochi also drew 53 walks and compiled a .423 on-base percentage, ranking fourth in the league in OBP.

Kuramochi put together a .989 fielding percentage in 49 games at second base (3 errors in 262 total chances, 38 double plays).

He also played 14 games in the outfield.

The Northern League Office also announced the awards for 2006 Rookie Pitcher of the Year (Brandon Goltz - Fargo-Moorhead), Relief Pitcher of the Year (Amad Stephens - Joliet), Most Outstanding Defensive Player (Greg Jacobs - Kansas City), Executive of the Year (Andrew Collier - Winnipeg), and Best Playing Surface (Silver Cross Field - Joliet).
