The
Calgary Vipers gave away an early lead in losing
10-7 to the Orange County Flyers at Goodwin
Field in Fullerton, California. The Snakes led
4-2 after an inning and a half but gave up seven
runs in the bottom of the third inning to fall
behind for good. With the defeat Calgary has now
lost five straight games and falls to 14-17 on
the second half of the season.
The
Vipers went out in front in the top of the first
inning as Nelson Castro led off with an infield
single, reached third on a throwing error by
pitcher Jeremy Zick who was attempting to pick
off Castro, and he scored on a Demond Smith run
batted in groundout. Following a Darryl Brinkley
double, Felix Jose made the score 2-0 with a RBI
single.
Right
back responded the Flyers in the bottom of the
inning with a David Bacani double and Jermy Acey
two run big fly for the 2-2 game.
Calgary went back up by two runs in the top of
the second as Patrick Arlis doubled and Travis
Drader hit a two run long ball for the 4-2 lead.
In
the bottom of the frame David Keesee singled,
Travon Jackson was hit by pitch, and Bacani
scored a run with a base hit for the 4-3 score.
Orange County exploded for seven runs in the
bottom of the third inning to take the lead and
put the game away with a 10-4 advantage. Patrick
Breen smacked a solo homerun, Jeff LaRue
doubled, Fernando Pacheco reached on a bunt
single, Mark Okano singled and pitcher Evan
Greusel committed a throwing error to allow
LaRue to score. Keesee followed by reaching on a
fielding error by Drader, Jackson knocked in a
run with a base hit, Bacani cleared the bases
with a three run triple, and Acey capped off the
inning with a RBI base knock.
Three
separate runs were pushed across by the Snakes
in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. In the
fifth Colin Moro knocked in a run with a
fielder's choice, Smith hit his first homerun as
a Viper in the sixth, and a Carlos Duncan double
and Jorge Mejia RBI single scored a final run in
the seventh for the 10-7 score.
Jeremy Zick (4-6) picked up the victory in
tossing a complete game while Greusel (8-3)
suffered only his third defeat of the season.
Calgary returns home Monday August 18th at 7:05
PM (MDT) to open up a nine game home stand
against Hall of Famer Gary Carter and his first
half South Division Champion Orange County
Flyers.
