VIPERS COMPLETE SWEEP OF
GOLDEYES
Darryl Brinkley drilled his
second home run of the series
and Sharnol Adriana added a
solo-shot of his own as the
Calgary Vipers completed a
three-game sweep of the Winnipeg
Goldeyes with a 6-5 victory on
Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.
The Vipers (20-20) were able
to survive a ninth inning rally
that saw the Goldeyes score
three runs on four hits to close
the gap to one.
Lefty Scott Sarver (3-4)
picked up the win on Sunday,
pitching into the seventh inning
while only allowing one run on
two hits. Jon Huizinga recorded
the final out of the game to
pick up his 12th save of the
season.
Kenny Chenard (2-3) was
saddled with the loss for
Winnipeg after giving up five
runs on six hits in nearly six
innings of work.
Calgary opened the scoring in
the top of the second inning
when Sharnol Adriana and Drew
Miller both singled and Jason
Colson walked to load the bases
for Brandon Rogers who hit into
a run-scoring fielder's choice
to put the Vipers up 1-0.
The lead was extended to 2-0
in the top of the fourth inning
when Adriana tagged Chenard for
a solo-home run to left field.
The long-ball was Adriana's
second as a Viper.
The Vipers moved ahead by
four in the fifth inning when
Rogers reached base with a
single before Brinkley slugged a
two-run shot to left field for
his second home run. His first
long-ball with Calgary came on
Friday night in Winnipeg.
Calgary's offence kept things
going in the sixth inning, with
Carlos Duncan being hit by a
pitch and stealing second before
scoring on an RBI single by
Colson to make it 5-0.
The Goldeyes finally got on
the board in the bottom of the
sixth inning when Fehlandt
Lentini singled and advanced to
second on a wild pitch from
Sarver, before coming around to
score on a base hit by Amos
Ramon.
The Vipers made it 6-1 in the
eighth inning when Adriana came
around to score for the third
time in the game. Adriana drew a
walk and stole second before
Colson drove him in with his
second RBI single of the
afternoon.
Winnipeg closed the score to
6-2 in the bottom of the eighth
inning when a throwing error by
Vipers catcher Brandon Rogers on
a double steal allowed Lentini
to score Winnipeg's second run
of the game.
An RBI double by Max Poulin
and RBI singles by Lentini and
Ramon in the bottom of the ninth
made it 6-5 but Vipers closer
Jon Huizinga got Jimmy Hurst to
pop out to short to end the
Goldeyes rally.
The Vipers have won four
games in a row and will now
return home for a weeklong home
stand beginning on Monday night
with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks
coming to town. First pitch on
Monday is scheduled for 7:05 PM
at Foothills Stadium.
